Winchester, UK

Andrew selected Winchester as our second country base, due to its location (within 90min of 3 planned day trips – to Farnborough Air Show, Legoland, and Portsmouth).  In the end, we opted not to do the day trip to Portsmouth, but to substitute it with a quiet day in Winchester, we found to be a very nice city.
Our accomodation was at the Holiday Inn, about a 5min drive from Winchester.  On the road in between was the Golden Lion hotel, which, like many local buildings, enthusiastically participayed in the summer floral festival.  It was also recommended as a good place to eat, and so we ended up having two nice meals there in the rear garden.

Winchester has a rich history, with the highlights being the Winchester Cathedral (including Jane Austin’s grave stone), and the connection with Alfred (King of Wessex in 9th C).

The town also has some very nice old architecture, and is very nice to walk around, with wide walking paths, several malls and lovely parks and gardens.

Two activities we undertook, were a visit to the movie theatre (to see the kids animated feature ‘How to train your dragon 2’), and a visit to the Science Museum and Planetarium (very conveniently about a 200m walk from our hotel).

Andrew was most amused to note that the backdrop for the Olympic dais was the Members Stand at the MCG.

The final photo below shows William in front of The Mucky Duck hotel, which we spotted from a distance and sought a photo, incorrectly thinking the name was The Lucky Duck (which we associated with Pippi’s lolly container).
